犬は前足の筋肉で、6、7割。後ろ足の筋肉は3、4割しか使っていませんので下半身を重点的に行います。そのため、どうしても後ろ足の筋肉が衰えやすくなります。
とくに股関節や膝関節の曲げ伸ばしに使われる大腿二頭筋（お尻の下あたりにある）が衰えやすいので、この筋肉が衰えてくるとトイレがうまくできなかったり、きちんと座れなくなったりして、最悪の場合、寝たきりになってしまいます。犬を上から見て下半身が細い場合は、意識して大腿二頭筋を鍛える筋トレを行うようにしましょう。
犬の脳トレはもっとも衰えにくい「鼻」を刺激し脳を活発にするのがポイントですのでノーズワークをお薦めします。
